World Coffee Roasting Championship is Coming to the US

For the first time ever, the World Coffee Roasting Championship will take place in the United States at the Specialty Coffee Expo in Houston from April 25-27, 2025. Over 25 top roasters from around the globe will compete, using the Stronghold S9X — the event’s Official Production Roaster — and adhering to the CVA Descriptive Assessment standards. If you're planning to be there in person, make sure to grab your show badge by registering on the official World Coffee Championships website.

This event is a big deal for coffee enthusiasts and professionals alike, offering a chance to witness the craft of roasting at its highest level. It’s also a great opportunity to see how different roasting techniques can bring out the best in specialty coffees.

Trade Tensions Brew Challenges for the North American Coffee Industry

The coffee industry across North America is facing a wave of uncertainty due to lingering trade tensions. Historically, the industry has weathered periods of volatility, most notably during the coffee crisis of the 1970s. Back then, a mix of supply shocks and geopolitical tensions led to soaring prices, causing industry consolidation. While some businesses adapted through diversification and strategic planning, others could not withstand the economic pressure. With many businesses operating roasting, packaging, and trading facilities in both the U.S. and Canada, potential tariffs have made decision-making more complex.

Companies are now considering where to source, roast, and distribute their coffee, which could impact pricing and supply chain efficiency. Additionally, experts predict that retail coffee prices may rise another 20-25% in the coming months, driven by climatic challenges, geopolitical tensions, and market speculation. Despite these high prices, the long-term outlook for the industry remains uncertain, and businesses are strategizing on how best to navigate the complexity.

Data-Driven Coffee Farming in Brazil

In Brazil, the Fundação Procafé has partnered with C3 Consultoria to launch an intelligence hub aimed at optimizing coffee farming. This initiative will create a comprehensive database to help standardize practices, boost productivity, and support sustainable farming.

João Marcelo Oliveira de Aguiar, executive superintendent of Fundação Procafé, emphasized the potential of this initiative, saying, “We want farmers to have access to solid data that can optimize the management of their crops.” By helping farmers make data-informed decisions, the project aims to strengthen Brazil’s role in the global coffee industry.
